Free First Grade Library Lesson – Setting

This free first grade library lesson on setting is included in my Full Year Library Curriculum. I love teaching setting lessons (because so many read alouds work for them), and I love using them for observations because there is a clear teach piece and an assessment. Try it out!

Mini Lesson and Read Aloud

1.Review setting – where the story takes place. Ask if anyone can guess the character from looking at the cover.

2.Ask students for examples of settings.

3.Ask students to predict the setting in the story.

4.Read The Old Truck by Jerome and Jarrett Pumphrey.

5.Ask who the character was. Ask if the truck was a character – did it do things? Did it think or feel? This can be tricky.

6.Ask what the setting was. There are a few of them. Open to different pages to show them.

7.Review how to use materials if needed.

8.Activity: Have students draw the truck in four new settings. You can make a list together first to help with ideas.
