Free Kindergarten Library Lesson – Fiction and Nonfiction
This free Kindergarten library lesson on fiction and nonfiction is included in my Full Year Library Curriculum. Fiction and nonfiction library skills are some of my favorite to teach and they work really well for observations.
Library Skill: Fiction and Nonfiction
Learning Target: I can draw facts from the book.
Materials:
- Narwhals by Grace Hansen
- Not Quite Narwhal by Jessie Sima
- Printable activity
- Drawing materials
Anticipatory Set
Show both covers of the books and ask what is the same and what is different.
Mini Lesson and Read Aloud
1.Review nonfiction.
- Teaches you about something
- Usually has photographs
2.Review fiction.
- Made up story from the author
- May have things that cannot happen in real life
3.Review fact – something the nonfiction book teaches you. You can learn from the words or photos.
4.Ask if students think the book is fiction or nonfiction.
5.Read Narwhals by Grace Hansen.
6.Ask if it was fiction or nonfiction and why.
7.Ask if students think the next book is fiction or nonfiction.
8.Read Not Quite Narwhal by Jessie Sima.
9.Ask if it was fiction or nonfiction and why. Open to the last page (narwhals and unicorns on the beach) and ask students for things that are made-up.
10.Activity:
1.Have students draw four things they learned about narwhals. For writing, have students stretch out the word to listen for beginning and ending sounds. You can add a writing prompt such as Narwhals can or Narwhals have. You can also change the boxes so they draw what they look like, where they live, what they eat, and another fun fact.
11.Short on time? Read only Not Quite Narwhals.
Assessment
Drawing activity – circulate while they are working and ask about their facts
Closure
Ask: Point to which book taught you facts about narwhals
