This free second grade library lesson on making connections to characters is included in my Full Year Library Curriculum. This is one of those lessons that you will teach year after year because the read aloud is awesome, and the activity is super fun!

Library Skill: Making Connections to Characters

Learning Target: I can make connections to the character in the story.

Materials

  • Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty, illustrated by David Roberts
  • Printable activity
  • Drawing materials

Anticipatory Set

Show the cover of the book and ask what students see and think about the cover.

Mini Lesson and Read Aloud

1.Review character.

2.Ask if anyone has any connections to the character based on the cover and title.

  • Examples:
    • My dad is an engineer.
    • My name starts with R.

3.Read Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty, illustrated by David Roberts.

4.Activity:

1.Rosie built things to solve problems. Can you solve a problem? Have students design and create a robot that does a household chore. Make sure they label the parts.
